Phenotypic matching by spot pattern potentially mediates female giraffe social associations

چکیده
Animal color pattern is a phenotypic trait that may mediate assortative mixing (also known as homophily), whereby similar looking individuals have stronger social associations. Masai giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis tippelskirchi) coat spot patterns show high variation and some traits appear to be heritable. Giraffes also visual acuity, which facilitate intraspecific communication recognition based on patterns. Giraffe groupings are dynamic, merging splitting throughout the day, but females form long-term We predicted adult female giraffes associations with other traits. quantified characteristics of 399 determined similarity among pairs (dyads) in their network. then tested for an association between (spot size, shape, orientation) dyadic strength, mixing. The strength was positively correlated shape. Our results compatible assortativity by mother offspring, potentially reflecting effect relatedness both These offer evidence could function cue kin or individual fission-fusion species.

متن کاملSex Differences in Giraffe Feeding Ecology: Energetic and Social Constraints
Sex ratios of giraffe groups differ in different habitats, with open vegetation having female biased groups, and tall, thick vegetation having male-biased groups. On a ranch in south-central Kenya, we quantified habitat differences of male and female giraffe groups and showed that the preference for open habitats by female groups was limited to groups with young. We suggest that this differenc...
متن کاملAutomated Email Answering by Text Pattern Matching
Answering email by standard answers is a common practice at contact centers. Our research assists this process by creating reply messages that contain one or several standard answers. Our standard answers are linked to representative text patterns that match incoming messages. The system works in three languages. The performance was evaluated on two email sets; the main advantage of our email a...
